When Pedro Almodóvar sent Tilda Swinton the script, he asked her who would play Ingrid
Story
Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. After years of not being in touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely endearing situation.
They both had Julianne Moore in mind
She appeared in the September 8, 2024 episode of The 7PM Project: Episode 2024 (2024). Successful writer "Ingrid" (Julianne Moore) is signing some books when one of her friends tells her that her old pal "Martha" (Tilda Swinton) is suffering from cancer.
When she visits her in the hospital, she realizes that things are not so good, and over the next few days they begin to grow closer, sharing each other’s trust and trusting each other
When an experimental treatment fails, former war reporter "Martha" makes a bold proposal to her boyfriend that will require them to retreat to a quiet Woodstock residence, where she takes matters into her own hands. Initially wary of this plan, "Ingrid" must decide whether or not she wants to help – with all the moral and legal implications that entails, so both women turn to their ex-boyfriend, "Damian" (John Turturro) for advice as they grapple with their conscience.
The dialogue between the two women seems too much about filling the audience in rather than building a connection
The concept here is indeed quite poignant, especially in light of the resurgent conversations going on in the UK about the right of terminally ill people to make their own decisions without fear of those they leave behind being persecuted by the law or zealots, but I can't say I loved the presentation or the style. They present things they should know about the other in a way that is too sterile, and at times I wondered if there wasn’t a proper level of dubbing going on.
In fact, the whole thing deals with serious emotional issues in an extremely sterile way
Both actors give strong performances, but their dynamic is unconvincing – well, it’s not for me, and the excessive chatter tends to drown out the emotional impact of the film. Alex Høgh Andersen sheds his Viking skin to briefly remind us of the horrors of the Vietnam War, but otherwise it’s largely down to the two actors dealing with a script that we all dread, just not very convincingly.
