Story

When visionary architect László Tóth and his wife Erzsébet flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their heritage and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious and wealthy client. Filming took place over 34 days. Filmed in Budapest and Carrara, Italy (2024) Savage is full of surprises.

The characters aren’t what you’d expect—not like Scooby Doo, but in the subtler, more gradual ways real people reveal themselves—as time passes, in new contexts, or circumstances force them to. . László Adrien Brody, the Jewish architect who escapes the clutches of bloody Europe and was literally born next to the Statue of Liberty, finds himself in America’s welcoming arms – or faces them – in a frantic opening sequence.

What is the lesson?

He becomes a traveler, constantly navigating the various thrills of life: existential, professional, family, intimate – he never takes his eyes off the prize of great achievement and never assesses the value of the prize. The awkward discovery that his success was born not in spite of his trauma, but because of it? Do we owe abuse?

Our lives are more meaningful than burning gasoline on the way

In the construction of our barbaric heritage (and homeland) of culture, country, power and the forces exercising it? The movie is catchy, looks cool, not boring (did you hear it’s long?). It seems like it’s based on an old novel — a mystical theme that I’d love to flesh out for some of the details the movie refuses to share.

But no novel

This old man’s search for meaning is ours too. And it’s up to us whether we construct László’s presence, for better or worse, whether we understand the machinations of his family, his country, and his rootlessness.
