Story

Elwood Curtis’ college dreams come crashing down on a Florida two-lane highway. Bearing the weight of an innocent mistake, he is condemned to the hell of Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets a fellow ward, Turner, who can see him. The two young black men form an alliance: Turner offers crucial survival advice, Ellwood clings to his optimistic view of the world. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement, Ellwood and Turner’s existence seems far removed from the fiery oratory of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Ellwood tries to maintain his humanity, awakening a new vision for Turner.
