Story

Under the burning sky, on a roadside on the coast of Ceará, the Motel Destino is the scene of dangerous games of lust, power and violence. Sixth film by director Karim Aïnouz, which has its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, after Madame Satã (2002), O Abismo Prateado (2011), Nevidljivi život Eurídice Gusmão (2019), Marinheiro das Montanhas (2021) and Firebrand (2023).. Directed by Karim Aïnouz, the film offers a mix of desire, love and crime in a story that follows the young Heraldo, who finds refuge in a beachfront motel, where he soon finds himself in unexpected situations in which eroticism and power tensions come to the surface while hiding from the gangsters who are after him.

Motel Destino, Portuguese for destiny, is a sex motel where the lives of Heraldo, Dayana and Elias intersect. It is a film about what fate has in store for these characters who, more than once, seem to defy their own destiny. Dayana and Elias, the owners of the motel, find in Heraldo not only a young boy they like and want to help, but also a seed that will allow unforeseen challenges to blossom in their lives.

Glances that give away more than enough to interpret their owner’s intentions are the physical manifestations of that tension. Sometimes they are the product of desire and sometimes jealousy, but they are always there, ready to express what they feel. Beaches, palm trees, sand, swimming pools, a bright color palette, elements that convey hot summer days when desire blossoms.

A film about emancipation from what we know as our everyday life

A desire that also manifests itself in their bodies, especially when they are naked, channeling doses of eroticism that need to be released, but also their intrinsic vulnerability. As a day ends and night takes its place, the place conveys the impending dangers of the relationships that the motel forges. Barely lit highways, the neon lights of the motel and the secrets that its walls hide open the door to dangerous destinies ready to be realized.
