Chronology
CIA agent Joe tries to balance her personal and professional life as the spearhead in the agency’s war on terror. Real-life military advisors helped produce a more authentic execution of weapons handling, house cleaning, positioning, squad-based activities, etc. Sheridan knows how to take us into macho, testosterone-fueled worlds with no clichés and, seemingly, no agenda. It is what it is. No need for excuses.
The guys are simple
Her characters are always down to earth and she’s extremely skilled at climbing. But to be great, you need to write good roles for women. The writing needs to be as good, if not better, than for men. The women are smarter, more complex. Beth in Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the one ranch hand (fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit into the story world naturally and effortlessly.
Truthfulness comes first!
They are strong and compelling. Not just “the partner in…” or T&A. She stepped up her game with the excellent Faith Hill character getting crushed in “1883,” followed by Dame Mirren in the flop that was “1923.” Now we have Zoe Saldana, doing some of the best work of her career. I’m totally fine with her being the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage that won’t give up and I thank you, thank you, thank you writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her outmaneuver a fellow soldier with another hundred pounds of muscle.
What a change!
I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out or just dominated on the ground before giving up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? From cheesy Hallmark trash to super tough special forces? I buy. Special mention: Mrs.
Good actor, could be interesting
Lanier as the evil teenage daughter. I look forward to the arc set for this loose canon, as long as they continue to steer clear of the teen angst cliche.
