Story
CIA Agent Joe tries to balance his personal and professional life as the spearhead of the agency’s war on terrorist-based activities, etc. Cited in Sovereign Awards (2024). Mr. Sheridan knows how to take us into testosterone-fueled, cliché-free, seemingly goal-less macho worlds. It is what it is.
Guys are simple
His characters are always down to earth and he is extremely skilled at casting. But to be great you have to write good parts for women. The writing has to be as good, if not better, than the writing for men. Women are smarter, more complex. Beth on Yellowstone (exceptional character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone rancher (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) are all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural, unforced way.
They are strong and compelling
Not only ‘the partner of…’ or T& A. She stepped up her game with the excellent Faith Hill character crushed in “1883”; followed by Dame Mirren in the misfire of “1923”. Now we have Zoe Saldana, who is doing some of the best work of her career. I totally buy her as the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t give up and thank, thank, thank you writers/director/producers for NOT letting her get the best of a male comrade with another-hundred pounds of muscle.
What a face!
Authenticity first! I think her character is much more interesting as someone who has to be knocked out or just beaten to the ground before she quits. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? From schmaltzy Hallmark Dreck to super badass Special Forces? I buy it.
Honorable Mention: Mr
Lanier as the mean teenage daughter. I look forward to the arc drawn for this vague canon as long as they continue to avoid the cliché of teenage angst. Good actor, could get interesting.
