When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the most secret and ancient events in the world, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. This is Carlos Diehz’s first major film appearance. He was an architect until 2020, when his last child left home and he decided to take online acting classes and audition. Adeyemi is rumored to be the first African pope. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 CE), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 CE), and Gelasius I (492-496 CE). However, it is likely that he means an ethnically African pope, since all three popes, born in Africa, were of European ethnicity. Lawrence: Our faith is alive precisely because it goes hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore there is no need for faith. Let us pray that God will give us a Pope who doubts. And may he give us a Pope who sins, asks for forgiveness and who endures… Featured on The 7PM Project: Episode of December 10, 2024 (2024). Greetings again from the darkness. It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a good, old-fashioned, serious, tense, “big” drama starring big movie stars. Well, that’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off his Oscar-winning ALL CHANGE IN THE WEST (2022), serves us in his latest film. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is a much-welcomed film that could earn him some Oscar consideration. Ralph Fiennes perhaps gives his best performance yet. And that’s saying something for this venerated actor, who has previously excelled in films such as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE CONSTANT GARDENER (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), THE BIGGER PLASH (2018) and THE MENU (2022). His impressive career is further enhanced by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, burdened with the heavy burden of facilitating the titular conclave responsible for electing a new pope. As the film opens, the beloved pope has just passed away… and as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, these games are all about political maneuvering, power struggles and backroom promises. Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, instead parading the different iterations of loyalty during each successive secret (of course) vote. Within the closed walls of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence spends most of his time investigating clues, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the enormous egos of the few considered (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends not to want the job while campaigning as the “progressive” voice the Church needs right now. John Lithgow plays Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most ambitious, who may or may not have been deliberately undermining someone else’s work. In any case, Cardinal Advivemi, played by Luciano Msmuati, is the victim of Tremblay’s actions. Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is the most open in his desire to return the church to the old ways (Latin Masses forever!), which he believes is right. Bryan F O’Byrne plays O’Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, and yet, despite all these men, it is Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes who manages to shoot (figuratively) fire from her eyes while maintaining her “place” and significantly influencing the process . She is stunning and unforgettable in her limited role.
