A widower and his daughter travel to the southern tip of Thailand to seek help from a Muslim doctor after unleashing a djinn in a rundown house. The multicultural and multi-religious approach in The Cursed Land is commendable and adds depth to its premise. Malaysian director and actor Bront Palarae delivers an excellent performance, as expected, showcasing his talent in both Malay and Thai. However, despite his best efforts, even his remarkable performance could not fully save the film from its shortcomings. The narrative spends too much time fixating on Mit’s personal decline, neglecting the more compelling aspects of the story, such as the community dynamics and the historical context. These elements, rich in cultural and religious interplay, are far more engaging than watching a grown man’s slow descent into madness. The filmmakers missed an opportunity to truly explore and expand on the multicultural elements that were already present. With a tighter narrative and a greater focus on these fascinating cultural themes, the film could have been much more impactful. As it stands, it’s a decent watch, but it falls short of its potential.
