Besides, I already know that this is my favorite genre and I will overlook any shortcomings that may arise. But when the dialogue in Episode 1 was slow, a few moments dragged on too long, and scenes of Quinten-esque dialogue left me speechless, I tried to console myself.
Surely they were just developing the characters and setting a unique tone. As the episodes dragged on, I realized that this series was going to deliver nothing. Not only was it inconsistent, but it had very few characters I actually cared about.
Honestly, I don’t know how the magic happens, but I found myself deeply drawn into the stories and characters in Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, Diplomat, and even The Old Man – despite all their flaws. Add to that the lack of stakes and the numerous omissions of basic details, and the ratio of irritating to intriguing became too high to be enjoyable. Yes, all the basic spy elements are there in Black Doves, but somehow the recipe was lacking salt, and by E03 I was already cranking up the playback speed.
